چکیده

Narcine entemedor and Rhinoptera steindachneri are 2 viviparous batoid species of commercial importance on the Pacific coast Mexico. However, no adequate management plan has been set forth for either them to ensure sustainable use. The aims this study were assess reproductive potential rate population increase (rʹ) both species, as well contrasting their strategies, infer how susceptible they fishing exploitation. Comparatively, among batoids, N. females have an early age at maturity, relatively high fecundity, intermediate lifespan, while R. low a short lifespan. According our estimates, however, potential, which exhibits by investing energy in maximizing fecundity increasing embryo’s body mass. Therefore, better capacity recover from overfishing (rʹ = 0.48) comparison with –0.18). methodology used proved be good option risk there is limited data.

Genetic structure in a progenetic trematode: signs of cryptic species with contrasting reproductive strategies.

Complexes of cryptic species are rapidly being discovered in many parasite taxa, including trematodes. However, after they are found, cryptic species are rarely distinguished from each other with respect to key ecological or life history traits. In this study, we applied an integrative taxonomic approach to the discovery of cryptic species within Stegodexamene anguillae, a facultatively progene...

Immunoecology of species with alternative reproductive tactics and strategies

Alternative reproductive tactics and strategies (ARTS) refer to polymorphic reproductive behaviours in which in addition to the usual two sexes, there are one or more alternative morphs, usually male, that have evolved the ability to circumvent direct intra-sexual competition. Each morph has unique morphological, ecological, developmental, behavioural, life-history, and physiological profiles t...

Reproductive Adaptations among Viviparous Fishes (cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae).

Within the family Poeciliidae, a wide range of adaptations accompanying viviparity has evolved. The reproductive mechanisms of five representative species were examined and related to the habitats in which they are employed. Poecilia reticulata, the guppy, represents the majority of poeciliids which have a single stage of embryos in the ovary at a time. Most of the nutrients are prepack-aged in...

Whitefly control potential of Eretmocerus parasitoids with different reproductive modes

A major component of the evaluation of biological control agents is the study and comparison of their biology, including the reproductive mode. In hymenopteran parasitoids, reproductive modes include thelytoky and arrhenotoky. Since a thelytokous population produces only females, it is assumed that they may be better suited for biological control than an arrhenotokous population. Here we compar...

Genetic connectivity in the Florida reef system: comparative phylogeography of commensal invertebrates with contrasting reproductive strategies.

Effective spatial management of coral reefs including design of marine protected areas requires an understanding of interpopulation genetic connectivity. We assessed gene flow along 355 km of the Florida reef system and between Florida and Belize in three commensal invertebrates occupying the same host sponge (Callyspongia vaginalis) but displaying contrasting reproductive dispersal strategies:...
